Nancha Bank (2)

19th October 1992

When I reached the summit there was obviously a southbound train waiting at Liushu as I could see steam rising in the far distance. At about 8.15am this train started up the bank and what followed was one of those magical steam moments as the very heavy train loaded with timber fought its way towards us with QJs Nos.2144 and 2420 doubleheading and 6961 banking.

The noise was tremendous and the train crawled up the curving 1 in 50 gradient.

The exhausts rose high into the cold air and hung as a trail leading back down the hill.

QJ No.6961 working hard banking the timber train up from Liushu.

The driver of 6961 listens for the whistles from the train engines to let him know that they are over the summit.
