Suiling Forestry Railway

17th October 1992

Suiling in Heilongjiang Province is 70km north of Suihua on the line to Beian. The 762mm gauge forestry line had been established in the 1930's and served timber yards and a wood distillation plant. The line was said to have reached an extent of at least 100km as it reached further out to the remaining forests. Locomotive No. 053 arrives at Suiling with the afternoon passenger train.

We were told that the fleet comprised nine of these 0-8-0 tender locomotives in daily use. Four were seen in the workshops at Suiling undergoing heavy repairs. This example No. 203 was built at Harbin in 1958 and we were allowed to take turns at driving it up and down the yard.

Class C2 No. 203 shunts timber flats and vans in the yard at Suiling.

Kv-4 Class No. 031021 and a 1980 built railcar outside the Suiling locomotive shed/workshops. This locomotive was built at the Mávag works in Budapest in 1952.
