Modaoshi Horseshoe Curve

20th October 1992

Take the line from Mudanjiang to the East in the direction of Jixi and the Russian border and you will find a spectacular location with a horseshoe curve at Shandichun close to Modaoshi. Having run on fairly level ground to Modaoshi (30km) this single track line then climbs at gradients of around 1 in 70 to the summit at Daimagou, 25kms further on. The scenery at the curve comprises a series of wooded hills and the line loops around the village before climbing up to disappear from sight as it surmounts a ridge. Trains could be in sight for twenty minutes as they laboured uphill. Here QJ 2785 is climbing into the curve with a morning freight from Mudanjiang. In a few minutes it will pass along the section of the line seen running left to right across the hillside in the background.

A second eastbound freight on the curve headed by QJ No.2973

A Jixi bound passenger train headed by QJ No.2879 was next up the bank. Next stop Muling?

QJ 2879 is seen crossing the river in a shot which is deceiving as it is actually on the new formation with concrete bridge whilst the old bridge in front carried an earlier alignment at a slightly lower level.

Heavy traffic on the main road into Shandichun.
