Heritage Risk on the Macclesfield Canal

The historic and picturesque Vaudrey’s Wharf on the Macclesfield Canal near Porter’s Farm Bridge (Bridge 72), Dane-in-Shaw, Congleton, is under serious risk of being lost.

British Waterways, who are responsible for the Macclesfield Canal, are threatening to stank off the entrance to it, following which it would be drained and abandoned.

It has been known for several years that this wharf has leaked, the water running down onto Biddulph Valley Way (a former railway line) and British Waterways now claim that the rate of water loss is unacceptable and that there is a potential danger of breach.

Regrettably, British Waterways do not own Vaudrey’s Wharf, so there is now an ongoing conflict of interest with no-one being prepared to take any responsibility for the proper repair of this leak.
