The Society, an entirely voluntary
organisation, has, since 1968, worked towards the
restoration of navigation into Bugsworth Canal Basin. Co-operation with the
owners, British Waterways, was strong and work continued through the intervening
years, culminating in the re-opening of the basins at Easter 2005 with the return of navigation to the original terminus of the Upper Peak Forest Canal.
Bugsworth Canal Basin, Scheduled Ancient Monument (Derbyshire SMP No. 242), opened in the closing years of eighteenth century and closed in the 1920s, is the last remaining narrow-canal/tramway interchange in the United Kingdom. Today, the IWPS continues to work in partnership with British Waterways and others to secure the long-term future of Bugsworth Canal Basin. The aims and objectives of this partnership are to secure this Industrial Heritage Site as a tourist centre and to encourage public enjoyment of this unique inland port at the terminus of the Peak Forest Canal, which was once a busy interchange with the Peak Forest Tramway for the transport of limestone. Located at Buxworth in the valley of the Black Brook, close to Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire, Bugsworth Canal Basin is seen as a major attraction for visitors with a range of interests and as a link to the Peak District National Park.
