There were at least seven kilns at one time at the Fourstones Colliery and Lime Works. During the later nineteenth century the works was operated by William Benson & Son Ltd. Stone was brought to the works via a waggonway from the extensive quarries to the north. The colliery closed in 1926 but the quarries continued to send stone down to the works until 1940-42. A more detailed history of the business can be found here.
