David Norman reports seeing a male Banded Demoiselle on a small stream at Newhall (64H SJ623455). Meanwhile, from Vale Royal (66P SJ643699) Peter Shaw reports that Hairy Dragonfly has finally made an appearance with two males flying over the old river.

At Shemmy Moss (56Z SJ595688) Paul Hill saw five Downy Emerald flying today. Andy Harmer was at Dutton Locks (57Y SJ582768) and found a teneral Black-tailed Skimmer, male and female Broad-bodied Chaser along with Red-eyed Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, Azure Damselfly and Blue-tailed Damselfly.

Andy Harmer reports the first sighting of Emperor Dragonfly for 2005 from the pond at Rocksavage (58A SJ519802) where he saw a teneral adult and found an exuvia. Meanwhile Bryan Roberts was at Anderton Nature Park (67M SJ656750) and saw Black-tailed Skimmer and Hairy Dragonfly. Nearby at Dairy House Meadow (67S SJ663757) Paul Hill saw another Black-tailed Skimmer and also Hairy Dragonfly at both Witton Mill Car Park (67M SJ663747) and the adjacent Neumann's Flash (67M SJ665748).

Today saw our annual outing to seek out Club-tailed Dragonfly on the Dee and I was joined by Caroline Daguet, Richard Gabb, Paul Hill and Mike Robinson for a wander along the banks at Aldford (45E SJ418599). It proved to be our most successful search ever and we recorded five females and a single male over a short stretch just above the blue bridge. Other species seen included the first Red-eyed Damselfly of the year and a few Banded Demoiselle, Large Red Damselfly, Common Blue Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly and Azure Damselfly.

After lunch we adjourned to the marlpits at Churton (45I SJ430565) where Caroline soon found a pair of Hairy Dragonfly in cop. We also saw plenty of Variable Damselfly, Large Red Damselfly, and Azure Damselfly.

Neil was out along the Dee today at Aldford (45E SJ418599) where he saw two Club-tailed Dragonfly and single Banded Demoiselle and Large Red Damselfly.

Neil Friswell reports a few Banded Demoiselle and a single Common Blue Damselfly from the Shropshire Union Canal at Tattenhall (46E SJ492607)

At Moore Reserve (58X SJ573853) today Rob McHale saw a single Four-spotted Chaser and a number of Large Red Damselfly, Blue-tailed Damselfly and Azure Damselfly.

Mat Bingham was at Anderton Nature Park (67M SJ651751) again today, where he found a single Four-spotted Chaser.

Dave Walters visited Little Budworth Common (56Y SJ584661) where single Four-spotted Chaser and Broad-bodied Chaser were seen along with both Large Red Damselfly and Common Blue Damselfly.

From Danes Moss (97A SJ907704), Les and Heather Green report seeing plenty of Large Red Damselfly and four Four-spotted Chasers. Meanwhile on Large Red Damselfly (88F SJ882804), Paul Hill also saw both species flying along with a single Azure Damselfly.

Stu Burnet reports from Handforth (88R SJ870875) where he found abundant Large Red Damselfly and few Azure Damselfly and a couple of Blue-tailed Damselfly.

At Moore Nature Reserve (58Y SJ592681) Mike Ashworth found two teneral Common Blue Damselfly, and at Anderton Nature Park (67M SJ651751) Mat Bingham found two Broad-bodied Chaser emerging at the dragonfly pond near the river.

Peter Shaw reports a single teneral Large Red Damselfly and a single teneral female Azure Damselfly at Vale Royal (66P SJ642699) on the Weaver. Meanwhile Rob McHale was at Birchwood (66K SJ645908) and saw several of the former species including one ovipositing plus a single Blue-tailed Damselfly.

Rob McHale checked the pond at Fearnhead (69F SJ643901) where he found a two Large Red Damselfly and few Azure Damselfly. There were similar species flying when I visited Newchurch Common (66E SJ607690).

2-5-05
A single Large Red Damselfly was found by Mat Bingham today at Vale Royal (66P SJ642699).
