Suihua Depot and Station

18th October 1992

In 1992 Suihua was a major junction on the route from Harbin to Beian. The area was very steamy indeed and the depot was a busy place at all times with locomotives arriving and departing. This view shows the exit roads with locomotives taking sand and water before blowing down at the specially positioned tubes to divert the blast away from passers-by.

QJ No. 680 heads north with a midday passenger departure from Suihua. The rail traffic here was heavy and constant, often with simultaneous departures on two trains in each direction.

At Suihua Station the pilot locomotive JS No.5740 removes empty stock whilst QJ 6843 backs down to take a passenger train and another QJ prepares to leave with a northbound freight.

Heavily decorated QJ 6800 'Iron Cow' passes the drifting smoke of Suihua shed with a southbound coal train. A blowdown tube can be seen at the extreme left.
