Nancha Bank

19th October 1992

The line which leaves the Harbin to Jiamusi main line at Nancha was one of those 'must see' places when steam was still in use. Heading for Yichun and Wuyiling the single track branch served forestry extraction towards the border with Russia and was faced with surmounting a range of hills adjacent to the main line. The resultant route describes a sharp 'S' after leaving the main line whilst rising at a gradient of around 1 in 30. Trains leaving Nancha has to take a run at the bank and their progress on the lower section was most impressive as the hurtled around the curves and then slowed rapidly as gravity and friction added to the weight of the load. In this view QJ No.6952 heads a long train of empty flat wagons away from Nancha.

Speed is falling as 6952 approaches the final section towards the summit.

Banking the flat wagons is QJ No.2590 which is the duty banker from Nancha on this day.
